Enterprise hole

This just describes so well one of the things that really annoys me about some organisations…labelled the enterprise hole, it’s the perception that most of a company’s activities are about achieving the perfect execution, and not innovation.

Talking with a good friend recently, they’re having problems in a workplace where they have lots of ideas to transform the company (which is kinda their job) but nobody wants to know about it.

What kind of incentive is that for your employees to perform?

True, if everyone’s just going in their own direction all the time, nothing will ever be executed properly. But I really believe that the little innovations count, and you’re more likely to get proper execution when people are responsible for their own ideas.

Great phrase, Enterprise Hole. Check out for a commentary about why this problem of why incentive systems do not result in innovation exists. Innovators don’t want rewards…they want investment, a chance to get the resources and know-how to prove out what they intend to build.

I have come to believe that only when we have well-established competencies for cross-company innovation will we have sustainable regimes for internal company innovation.
